Abstract:

Municipal Solid Waste should be considered as a crucial matter in municipal management. Public participation known to be a key factor in this process, thus assessing the amount of it could significantly upgrade management of the matter. This study evaluates the public participation in source separation of municipal solid waste in 4th district of Tehran city, therefore, questionnaires were designed. Total sum of these questionnaires were 400 which was calculated by approximate population of study area and Cochran formula. The questionnaire contained 24 questions in 5 sections of 1- Personal information 2- Assessment of environment 3- Assessment of public awareness 4- Assessment of behavior of individuals and affecting parameters on source separation process 5- Assessment of participation (It should be noted that respondents were required to be aged over 7 years in order to ensure the respondents were able to understand the questionnaire and provide responses). Results showed environmental health and public awareness of source separation process is at moderate level and legislation of process is at low level.  Since respondents agreed to establishment of a tariff system (approx.70%), by implementing it, could increase public cooperation in decision-making and their incentive in participation as an extrinsic factor. This approach is based on reward/ penalty system according to source-separation of solid waste.
